This is an interesting one. Xipe Totec was the brain child of Simon “Tready” who was active in the local scene with Dement Ensemble in the 1990’s and later on in the 2000s with a punk band called “The Moots”. It was envisaged, written and recorded by Simon with fellow Dement Ensemble vocalist Sascha filling out the vocal duties. The music itself (to my ears) seems to loosely fit in with viking metal. Released in 2002, I’ve got now real information on how it sold, but listening to it now its obvious the guy could really play and even as a one man project the songs hold up really well with great riffage, varied songs that don’t rely just one one style. This is a genuinely cool release. It combines black metal, some more symphonic, heavy rock and death metal all into one neat package. Despite the varied influences this is really coherent and easy for the listener to get into. I’m going to assume this is no longer available in physical form, but luckily its on Band Camp available for streaming or purchase if you so choose. I’d strongly recommend you check out this great piece of Canberra Metal history.
